The Nantahala National Forest is the largest of North Carolina's four National Forests. The Nantahala Forest encompasses 531,148 acres with some of the highest peaks in the Appalachian Mountain range ranging from 5,800 feet in Jackson County to 1,200 feet in Cherokee County. The Forest is divided into three Districts, Cheoah in Robbinsville, NC, Tusquitee in Murphy, NC, and the Nantahala in Franklin, NC. All district names come from the Cherokee language. In the Cherokee language "Nantahala" means "land of the noon day sun," a fitting name for the Nantahala Gorge, where the sun only reaches to the valley floor at midday. Besides admiring the scenic splendor of its largely untouched natural environment, vacationing visitors and locals alike, enjoy a wide variety of outdoor recreational activities in the Nantahala National Forest. In the heart of the Nantahala National Forest, the Nantahala River is a nationally recognized family friendly whitewater rafting river for amateurs and professionals alike. Hiking, mountain biking, and horse back riding are all popular.
